Internship at TEAMS Design GmbH
*Industrial Design & Research Intern
01. Shimge Pump Industry Group Co., Ltd
This project is intended to revitalize the company’s new vision for its design language. One of the most critical deliverable of the project was to think outside of the box; as we aimed to break the fixed idea of the visual language of industrial tools. (Headquartered in China, ‘Shimge’ is a share-holding enterprise specialized in manufacturing a variety of water pumps and air compressors.)
- My Role
Throughout the entire duration of the project, I played a key role as part of the team, assisting senior industrial designers during the iterative process of exploring and generating concepts. As a result of that, the team has come up with a couple of major concepts (above image) based on our research on human factors and engineering through close collaboration with the client.
“Iterative design is a design methodology based on a cyclic process of prototyping, testing, analyzing, and refining a product or process.”
- Internal Layout
Considering the fact that designing and manufacturing are inseparable in the way that they both are a creative process, how each part of the product gets assembled in the production line and the way internal layout can be planned out have always been our top agenda. With this in mind and through constant communication within the team, I have suggested a variety of proposals as an intern to help invigorate the team with fresh new ideas.
- Design Iteration & Visualization
My responsibility in the team covered a wide range of areas, from taking part in usability & human factors research, assisting senior designers throughout the entire duration of the project, to finalizing the end bit of visualization for client meetings. In this project, particularly, my contribution has been about designing internal layout and creating visualization at every single threshold for internal and external communication. I have generated numerous concepts and ideas for each stage, and at the end of the day, I have presented them to the team for instant feedbacks.
02. Bosch
Equally as designing physical products, I have also played an assisting role in a few research projects, and one of them included and required human factors research on protection gloves by ‘Bosch’. Evaluating its current products in the market, our aim was to improve comfort whilst optimizing performance (human performance) and durability of the product. I have actively participated in qualitative studies and testings through lo-fi prototyping and anthropometrical analysis.
- Documentation has also been a critical part of the studies and research.
As part of the cross-functional team, I’ve been often invited to open discussions on research & strategy topics regarding several different projects. Thanks to this, I had a number of chances to collaborate with people from different, diverging path in a multidisciplinary setting.
